Slip beneath the surface of one of North America's most remarkable marine ecosystems. The Laguna Madre isn't just a bay — it's where the Gulf of Mexico begins.
The Laguna Madre is one of only two hypersaline lagoons in the entire United States — a rare, shallow marine estuary that serves as a nursery for much of the sea life found in the Gulf of Mexico. The fish you'll encounter here are at the very beginning of their story.
Our licensed snorkel guides lead you into this living nursery, where the water is only 3 to 6 feet deep and remarkably clear. You're not snorkeling over a sandy tourist bottom. You're floating above a seagrass ecosystem that supports an extraordinary range of marine life — creatures that are born here, grow here, and eventually make their way out into the Gulf.
This is a tour worth understanding, not just experiencing.

YOUR VESSEL
You'll make the journey to the snorkel grounds aboard the Diver I — a 60-foot US Coast Guard inspected vessel equipped with air conditioning, indoor and outdoor seating, a fresh water shower, and an onboard restroom. Comfortable going out, comfortable coming back.
The Laguna Madre rewards the curious. Once you're in the water, you're surrounded by residents of one of Texas's most productive marine ecosystems. Keep your eyes open for piggy perch and pinfish darting through the seagrass, pufferfish doing their best to look unbothered, toadfish tucked into the bottom, filefish hovering at the edge of visibility, ladyfish moving fast, grunts, hermit crabs going about their business, and if the conditions are right — butterfly rays gliding just beneath you, and the unmistakable shape of a mottled sea hare moving across the bottom. Bring fish food, and you'll attract a crowd.
Most snorkel destinations require you to be a confident swimmer in open water. The Laguna Madre is different. At 3 to 6 feet deep, you have the security of knowing the bottom is right there.
That said — here's the local secret: try not to stand up. The moment your feet touch the bottom, the sediment clouds the water around you and your visibility drops. The magic of this place is in floating slowly and gracefully, face in the water, letting the ecosystem come to you. Our guides will show you how before you ever leave the boat.
Snorkeling vests are available for anyone who wants extra confidence without needing to find the bottom. If it's your first time snorkeling, this is one of the best places on the Gulf Coast to learn.
FIRST-TIMER FRIENDLY
The water is only 3 to 6 feet deep. Snorkeling vests are available if you want extra support, and our guides are in the water with you throughout the tour. One tip: resist the urge to stand up — touching the bottom stirs up sediment and clouds your visibility. Float easy, and the water stays clear.
Bring a bathing suit, sunscreen, and a towel. All snorkel gear is provided — mask, fins, and snorkel. Drinks and snacks are available to purchase on board, or you can bring your own.
Yes. The shallow, calm waters of the Laguna Madre make this one of the best first-snorkel experiences anywhere. Kids who can follow basic water safety instructions are welcome.
It's one of only two hypersaline lagoons in the United States and one of the most ecologically significant marine estuaries in North America. A huge portion of the Gulf of Mexico's sea life begins its life here. You're snorkeling in a nursery.
Three to six feet at the snorkel site — shallow enough to stand, but our best advice is don't. The moment you touch the bottom the sediment clouds the water. Float easy and the visibility stays clear.
The Diver I is the 60-foot vessel that carries you to and from the snorkel site. It's US Coast Guard inspected and comes equipped with air conditioning, indoor and outdoor seating, a fresh water shower, and an onboard restroom.
